The Quick Answer
- The 7 times table goes 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49, 56, 63, 70, 77 and 84.
- Children learn it in Year 4, when they should know all their tables up to 12 × 12.
- The multiplication tables check in Year 4 includes 2 to 4 questions from the 7 times table.
- Most 7s facts are already known from other tables, so the new ones to focus on are 7 × 6, 7 × 7, 7 × 9, 7 × 11 and 7 × 12.
The 7 Times Table
| Multiplication | Answer |
|---|---|
| 1 × 7 | 7 |
| 2 × 7 | 14 |
| 3 × 7 | 21 |
| 4 × 7 | 28 |
| 5 × 7 | 35 |
| 6 × 7 | 42 |
| 7 × 7 | 49 |
| 8 × 7 | 56 |
| 9 × 7 | 63 |
| 10 × 7 | 70 |
| 11 × 7 | 77 |
| 12 × 7 | 84 |
How to Learn the 7 Times Table
- Use facts you already know. 2 × 7 is the same as 7 × 2. By Year 4, children already know the 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 10 times tables, so most 7s facts are not new.
- Split 7 into 5 and 2. For 7 × 8, work out 5 × 8 = 40 and 2 × 8 = 16, then add them: 40 + 16 = 56.
- Count on from 10 × 7. 10 × 7 = 70, so 11 × 7 = 77 and 12 × 7 = 84.
- Learn the hardest facts on their own. 7 × 6 = 42, 7 × 7 = 49 and 7 × 8 = 56 cause the most mistakes.
- Practise little and often. A few minutes a day works better than one long session.
Tip: “5, 6, 7, 8” is a handy way to remember that 56 = 7 × 8.
7 Times Table Division Facts
Every multiplication fact gives two division facts. If 7 × 8 = 56, then 56 ÷ 7 = 8 and 56 ÷ 8 = 7.

|---|---|
| 14 ÷ 7 | 2 |
| 21 ÷ 7 | 3 |
| 28 ÷ 7 | 4 |
| 35 ÷ 7 | 5 |
| 42 ÷ 7 | 6 |
| 49 ÷ 7 | 7 |
| 56 ÷ 7 | 8 |
| 63 ÷ 7 | 9 |
| 70 ÷ 7 | 10 |
| 77 ÷ 7 | 11 |
| 84 ÷ 7 | 12 |

The 7 Times Table in the Multiplication Tables Check
The multiplication tables check is taken by Year 4 pupils in June. It has 25 questions and pupils have 6 seconds to answer each one. The check’s assessment framework puts an emphasis on the 6, 7, 8, 9 and 12 times tables because they are the most difficult. Each check includes 2 to 4 questions from the 7 times table. What year do children learn the 7 times table?
In Year 4. Children already know the 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 10 times tables from earlier years. By the end of Year 4 they should know all the tables up to 12 × 12.
